Chinatown Photography Exhibit Debuts At Glass Key Photo TonightMatt Osborne

Tonight, a new exhibit of street photography snapped in Chinatown will debut at Glass Key Photo (442 Haight St.).

Dubbed "Chinatown 4 Ways," the show features pics from four local photographers, including Matt Osborne of Glass Key Photo and Gordon Szeto of the former 4x5 Gallery.

"Chinatown was a big part of Gordon's childhood and he decided to start documenting the area as it changes," Matt told us. "He started going there weekly and after a few weeks I joined in just to shoot (no theme/project in mind)."

Matt and Gordon would make the trips to Chinatown themselves, but after a couple of weeks they began bringing company — namely, fellow photographers and Lower Haighters Lucas Saugen and Brian Brooks.

"A few of us started to tag along and it became a weekly thing that we go out and spend the mornings walking around Chinatown," Lucas explained. "We also did some night shooting at different times."

Matt says that the group realized they had all been "going to the same places at the same time yet all shot very different shots... so we decided to put together a show."

Lucas shot with different vintage film cameras from the store and a wide variety of film types. He also used his own digital cameras. All the photos he chose for the show ended up being color, while Matt, Gordon and Brian's contributions are all black and white.

"Chinatown is all about color and light to me," Lucas said. "A lot of my shots tend to be small details of things I find. Sometimes rather abstract. Very few people."

In constrast, there are black and white works by Brian Brooks, like this one:

Lucas says that the quartet will continue taking the photo walks in the future. "This is an ongoing project," he says.

Tonight's opening reception runs from 6:30pm to 9pm. The show will be up through April 30th.
