Introducing Haight Street Mamas, A New Offering For The HaightPhoto: Vanessa Wauchope

Parenting young children in and around the Upper Haight is no longer the lonesome occupation it perhaps once was. Since July 2014, Upper Haight local Vanessa Wauchope has been building Haight Street Mamas, a local group coordinated for and by the parents of new and young children.

Haight Street Mamas was one of a number of similar parent-focused social organizations in San Francisco featured earlier this month. It was the only such group in the Haight, where young parents are a growing but relatively small element of the population.

We asked Wauchope about the genesis of Haight Street Mamas, whose members currently number 400, according to its Facebook page.

"I knew there were tons of families in the neighborhood but couldn't find a meetup or organized activities that were age appropriate," she said. "Music Together has a wonderful music program on Waller Street and the library provides story hours, but beyond that I had to get in the car and drive to another neighborhood for activities. I wanted a supportive community for new moms, locally."

This spring marks some big landmarks for Haight Street Mamas. Last weekend, Haight Street Mamas held its first big official event: a Bunny Hop (shown above) at the Dahlia Dell in Golden Gate Park. Wauchope said there were 120 families in attendance, with music, food, a photo booth, mimosas and coffee.

This was big for a HSM event, Wauchope said: most new parent lunch and park meetups draw 10 to 20 moms weekly.

In April, Wauchope said that Haight Street Mamas will be launching a new seminar series. "We will have a seminar for parents introducing them to local parenting resources," she said. "On the panel will be a wellness coach, a sleep consultant, a couples therapist and a childcare consultant. We will roll out additional wellness events as well—pilates, yoga, etc."

If you're a new parent in the Haight interested in joining up, subscribe to the Facebook group, Wauchope said. Below is a list of regular and upcoming events:
