You may have noticed some police activity on Page Street in the early hours of yesterday morning.

According to tipster Jason W., "There were at least six SFPD cruisers speeding up and down Page St. and blowing through stop signs between Masonic and Baker" at or around 4am.

Ten minutes later, Jason said, cruisers were back, crawling up and down the street with spotlights out, and supported by several officers on foot with flashlights.

In an email to Hoodline yesterday afternoon, SFPD's Park Station Captain Raj Vaswani said the incident was car burglary-related. "Officers were on extra patrols in the Panhandle due to auto burglaries in the early morning hours," Vaswani said.

After spotting a suspicious-looking person hiding from them with a bag in hand (possibly from a car, Vaswani said), the officers on patrol "tried to stop him and he tried to fight them and ran. They chased him and eventually caught up to him in Buena Vista Park."

The officers on duty arrested the suspect for resisting arrest and delaying an investigation, but noted that the suspect had dropped the bag in the course of the chase, and that it hadn't been recovered.

This comes in the midst of a steady traffic in break-ins (largely of the car-and-garage sort) in the area lately.

Recent newsletters from the Park Station have emphasized the importance of not leaving valuables in cars—even in the trunk, since it's easy enough to spot someone stashing goods in a car trunk and then walking away from it.

And the recent uptick in garage break-ins assisted by automatic garage door openers, some of them stolen from victims' cars, should make you think twice about leaving that button hanging on the visor.
