Alamo Square will soon see construction of a new ADA-accessible restroom, among other improvements.

As we reported nearly a year ago, the new bathroom is being constructed at the north end of the children's playground. It's part of the Alamo Square Water Conservation and Restroom Renovation Project, which also includes irrigation and landscaping enhancements.

The park already features one restroom facility (pictured above), which was built in 1914. That structure is set to be renovated, with its metal doors replaced by metal gates and additional toilets added to both the men's and women's sides.

Meanwhile, the new structure will be a unisex, single-stall restroom. The most recent design has it envisioned as a concrete "Archimedean spiral" form that, as the SF Rec & Park Department puts it, "articulates the modern playground design, but that also integrates the historical context of the park with the use of subtle textures and integral color". The new bathroom will be "set back from the pathway into the existing hillside," according to planning documents.

The project received various agency approvals last year, and construction permits were officially filed for the new restroom just last month. The estimated cost for the new structure is $178,000, with funds for work on both restrooms coming from a 2008 San Francisco bond.

With the design phase complete and the permitting process now well underway, expect to see construction begin shortly.
