New Eateries Set To Sweeten Up The Inner Sunset

Hoodline/Walter Thompson

If you ride the N-Judah and have a sweet tooth, this could be good news or bad news: recently filed construction permits suggest that an ice creamery and a bakery/confectionary are coming soon to the area of 9th and Irving.

At 1290 9th Ave., windows are papered over with brown paper stenciled "TOP SECRET," but an active permit reveals that a project described as "San Francisco Hometown Creamery" is underway. When Hoodline stopped by this afternoon, contractors were demolishing the interior of the former Hotei Sushi location.

According to the Planning Department, permits are awaiting approval, but a contractor said work on the approximately 2,000-square-foot space should be completed in two months.

Over at  839 Irving St., we looked into a tip from Hoodline reader Elysa Hill and determined that the space is being renovated for use as a "self-service restaurant." Formerly the site of jeweler Pearl Gallery and before that, Florabunda Florist, the storefront now bears a "coming something sweet" message in the window. "That's all I need," said a woman jogging past us on the sidewalk.

And at 716 Irving, site of the recently-closed Irving Street Cafe, workers are "retiling and painting" the space, said a Department of Building Inspection representative. No new permits for electrical or plumbing work have been received by DBI or the Planning Department, so odds are good that a new restaurant is moving into the spot Irving Street Cafe held down for 26 years.

As ever, we'll post more news about these potential new food options as they take shape. If you have any info, please email tips [at] hoodline {dot} com or post them in the comments.
