Hayes Valley Leftovers: Art, Upcoming Events And More Weekend TidbitsPhoto: Steve McClanahan/Flickr

To start your Memorial Day weekend off, here are a few upcoming events, bits of neighborhood news and special occasions that Hayes Valley locals should note:

  • Polanco Gallery has finally moved locations, after 20 years at 394 Hayes St., to 334 Gough St. around the corner. Although the space is 400 square feet smaller, it's more affordable, and still keeps the long-standing Mexican fine arts gallery in the neighborhood. Swing by to wish them good luck in their new location.
  • Photo majors and art enthusiasts may recognize the name and work of photographer Sally Mann, who's known best for her intimate black-and-white photographs of her family. She's speaking at the Nourse Theater on Wednesday May 27th in conversation with Steven Winn. The talk begins at 7:30, and tickets can be found here.
  • Absinthe is offering a special early-bird prix-fixe dinner before evening performances of San Francisco Opera’s Les Troyens. This $44 dinner is available from 4pm to 5pm on the evenings of Friday 6/12, Tuesday 6/16, Saturday 6/20, Thursday 6/25 and Wednesday 7/1, and includes a choice of entrees from steak frites, potato-crusted salmon, coq au vin or tomato flatbread. Reservations are available by calling (415) 551-1590.
  • Ice cream lovers, take note: Hayes Valley's Smitten Ice Cream is opening a second location in San Francisco. Located at 2404 California St. (at Fillmore), the new spot should be opening soon.
  • The next Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association meeting is taking place on Thursday, May 28th at 7pm. Topics on the agenda include greening activities and traffic changes. Swing by the Hayes Valley Playground Clubhouse at 699 Hayes St. to keep up to date on local news and changes.
  • If you're already looking ahead to June, know that Two Sisters Bar and Books is hosting a Monday Night Mixology course on "Vinegars & Shrubs" and how to use them in cocktails. Classes often sell out, which is why we're giving you notice in advance. This one is scheduled for Monday June 8th, from 6:30-9pm. Find out more info and sign up here
