4505 Burgers & BBQ Debuts Shipping Container PatioPhotos: Nuala Sawyer / Hoodline

We mentioned that it was coming, and this coming weekend marks its official debut: 4505 Burgers & BBQ (705 Divisadero St.) now has additional indoor seating in the form of a renovated shipping container.

The patio is split into thirds. One third is inside the shipping container, one third is underneath a tin patio with heat lamps, and the final third is what patrons have thus far been used to: fully exposed to the elements.

The shipping container itself was sourced from Open Bay Shipyard, and the design was headed up by 4505 owner Ryan Farr. "While waiting for permits for the new patio, we really fell in love with the temporary space. We tried to make it as rustic as possible, but at the same time keep it a welcoming community dining area," he told us. "To me that's what BBQ is all about—simple good food with good friends, old and new."

Three large skylights brighten up the space inside the shipping container.  A rusted tin planter extends along the length of the wall, stocked up with succulents and greenery. The wood used for the benches and tables is the same locally-sourced material used for the counters and chopping boards inside.

Aesthetics aside, the shipping container also increases the functionality of the patio space and offers 20 extra seats. Fans are installed to keep air flowing during rare hot San Francisco days, and a large TV sits on the lefthand side of the space. The TV will be turned on for big games, but the use of it will be limited. "We want it for when we need it," says manager Trevor Bowles, "but we want this to be a dining space first and foremost."

The shipping container also functions as a space for an outside server. Patrons will now be able to order beer from the patio and avoid waiting in long lines. Three taps are installed inside the container, featuring a rotating selection of two Anchor Steam brews as well as one tap devoted to Pilsner. Coined "patio beers," the three will be offered at $4 each, less than many of the pricier local craft brews offered inside.

Regular patrons of Divisadero's barbecue joint may also notice a whole hog being smoked in the patio area. This will be a regular event, with Ryan planning to roast a hog once a week during the summer, and a hog roast taking place every day that the Warriors play in the NBA Finals.

There's another Warriors game tonight, so swing by 4505 for some hog and to catch the game in the new space.
