If you're wondering why 16th Street's charming coffee shop Café Sophie has gone dark, the answer is that the closure is only temporary—at least, that's what the owners hope.

Tipster Anthony B. tipped us off about a going-away party held at the cafe this past Sunday, June 21st. Café Sophie's Facebook page also had a post about the event:

"We had to close for a city mandate that requires a safety retrofit for the building," Café Sophie's Julia Simon told us. "The going-away party was a blast. There was a great turnout, and everyone really enjoyed the live music."

Unfortunately, Simon says that Café Sophie may not reopen after the renovations are complete. "We'll try our best to come back, but we will be closed for 2-4 months after construction begins on July 1st," Simon explained. "We'll be losing a lot of business during that time, so we'll see what happens."

Since opening at 3463 16th St. in June 2011, Café Sophie has become a neighborhood favorite for its Verve espresso drinks, pastries, and weekend brunch menu, as well as its friendly, relaxed vibe. One positive sign for a potential reopening: the cafe just received its beer and wine license, meaning that if it does reopen, it may be able to stay open later and welcome more clientele.
