Since January, we've been covering the renovation of Adah's Stairway, a project dedicated to longtime San Francisco walking enthusiast and bestselling author of Stairway Walks of San Francisco Adah Bakalinsky.

To recap, the stairway, located at Waller and Buena Vista East, was awarded $70K from the city for renovations. The project included a densely planted garden (designed to attract Cedar Waxwings), plans to improve the stability and functionality of the 91-step staircase, and the addition of a stone balustrade with an anti-graffiti sealant. There will also be a plaque honoring Adah.

Here's the status, according to the Buena Vista Neighborhood Association's most recent newsletter:

"Terrific progress has been made by neighbors, Nature in the City and DPW putting in a majestic stone balustrade, concrete foundation and beautiful landscaping at the top of the stairway where it meets Buena Vista Ave East.  Much preparation work has also been completed for landscaping down to the corner of Broderick St and Waller St."

The stairway, which was a little worse for the wear, has been spruced up thanks to help from local nonprofit Nature in the City, as well as volunteers who've organized through BVNA and Meetup.com. More landscaping work is on the way.

This Thursday, June 18th Friday June 19th at 4pm, Supervisor Scott Wiener and representatives from DPW and Mayor Lee's office will be at the stairway to show off the completed first phase of the new project. The event is open to the public, so take a walk, enjoy the garden, and celebrate Adah, who worked to document the over-600 public and semi-private stairways hidden throughout in the city.
