FiDi & North Beach Recent Crimes: Port-A-Potty Fire, Bank Robberies, MuggingsPhoto: alancleaver/Flickr

Here are the latest recent crimes and injuries in the Financial District and North Beach along with nearby neighborhoods, as reported by SFPD sources. Though not meant to be comprehensive, it should serve as a brief snapshot of recent activity to help locals stay informed. We'll also occasionally include snippets from SFPD Central Station Capt. David Lazar's newsletter.

Capt. Lazar was a decoy pedestrian from 3–4pm June 25th at Clay and Kearny streets and issued 10 citations to motorists, mostly for not yielding.

He also warns everyone again to never leave any items in a vehicle, even in the trunk. He wrote of a recent case about a couple from Denver, Colorado, who parked their vehicle on the 500 block of Vallejo Street at 10pm June 15th:

"They returned to their car 40 minutes later and discovered their window was smashed and their property was stolen from the trunk. One of the items taken was a bag which contained $12,000 in cash. This makes a good case for not leaving items in the trunk and this type of loss reminds the criminals that the tourist areas of San Francisco are places to commit this crime."

Capt. Lazar also reported via Twitter at 2:05pm June 26th that the Central Station's plain clothes team captured an auto burglar at Bay and Kearny streets. Follow SFPD Central Station on Twitter for news of great arrests, station activities and more.

Next, the latest recap starts with yet another port-a-potty fire, this one reported at 8:28pm June 19th in Union Square. No more details are available.

A 40-year-old man was robbed of his cell phone and backpack at 1am June 21st at Stockton and Chestnut streets in North Beach. The man was talking on his phone when the men, age 30, approached in a brown sedan and produced a black handgun. They took his property and fled in the car. No injuries were reported.

At the corner of Kearny and Sutter streets in the FiDi at 10:40pm June 21st, a 35-year-old man was robbed with a stun gun. Two men, ages 20–25, approached from him from behind as he was talking on his phone and took the phone. He struggled to get the phone back and one of the suspects placed the stun gun against his body. He gave them money in exchange for getting his phone back. No injuries were reported.

A bank was robbed in the 500 block of Montgomery Street  in the FiDi at 10:15am June 22nd. A man in his forties entered the bank and proceeded to the bank teller window, handing a note stating he had a gun. A female teller, 32, handed the money over, and he fled.

A 47-year-old man was walking in at Pacific and Grant avenues in Chinatown at 2:30am June 23rd when he was struck in the back of the head and blacked out. When he awoke, his smart phone, wallet, money and credit cards had been taken, and he was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

An arson was reported at 1:50am June 24th in the 500 block of Green Street in North Beach. A man, age 20–30, was seen with lighter fluid prior to smoke emitting from an apartment. A 68-year-old man suffered the loss of a damaged floor and carpet.

A woman, age 40–45, stole jeans from a store in the 2700 block of Taylor Street in Fisherman's Wharf at 5:05pm June 24th. On the way out, a 22-year-old man confronted her and another man, age 25–30, pushed him to the ground, but he didn't report any injuries. Both suspects fled in an unknown direction.

The Safeway at 145 Jackson St. was robbed of cash at 6:12pm June 24th. A man, age 30, entered the store and approached a 54-year-old man at the counter. The suspect grabbed money from the cash register, and a struggled ensued. The suspect fled with the money in an unknown direction; there were no injuries.

Two young males, 13–14 years old, robbed a store in the 900 block of Grant Avenue in Chinatown at 7:45pm June 24th. One of them went behind the store counter and took a knife and hooded sweatshirt while the other distracted the victim, a 69-year-old man. Both suspected pushed the man out of the way and fled the store heading southbound on Grant Avenue. There were no injuries.

A "hot prowl" burglary, so-called because the victim is in the home at the time, happened in the 1500 block of Grant Avenue in North Beach at 9:40pm June 24th. A man, age unknown, kicked a back door open and entered the residence.  The victim, a 32-year-old man, went into kitchen and saw him, and the suspect immediately fled the scene. No losses or injuries were reported.

Another bank robbery occurred at 1:30pm June 25th at One Embarcadero Center in the FiDi. A 25-year-old female teller was approached by a man, age 40–50, who had a gun and demanded money. She complied, and he fled the bank on foot in an unknown direction. An unknown amount of cash was taken.
