Man Hing Market Closes, Alice Chinese Bistro To Change Ownership

Walter Thompson/Hoodline

Thanks to a reader tip from Peter R., we've learned that Man Hing Market has closed up shop at 1368 9th Ave. Besides offering prepared foods, the grocery was one of the few left in the Inner Sunset that stocked Asian specialty foods and staples.

The market closed late last week; as of today, the property hasn't been listed as a commercial rental.According to a Nextdoor discussion, Man Hing's owners shuttered the store because there were fewer customers after Park Grocery (now a One Medical office) and other neighborhood markets closed. "Many of my crucial culinary items (as well as sake) came from there. It is going to be a long walk now with jasmine rice and other heavy items," one commenter wrote.

With Man Hing's closure, Inner Sunset residents still have Asian bakeries and restaurants to choose from, but the number of Asian groceries has declined sharply. Sakura, a Japanese discount grocery, will likely see an increase in business, but customers seeking a wider selection will need to cross 19th Avenue for the time being.

Meanwhile, Alice Chinese Bistro (420 Judah St.) is changing hands, according to a notice in the window from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. The new owner, Hao King Inc., has applied to transfer the bistro's license to serve beer and wine to a new restaurant, which has yet to be named.

Previously Dash Cafe and Dragonfly restaurant, Alice Chinese Bistro does an active take-out business and has an outbound N-Judah stop outside its front door. As soon as we have more information about the new owner's plans, we'll post an update.
