New Santa Clara Market Gutted, Moving Across StreetPhotos: Andrew Dudley / Hoodline

The two Santa Clara markets at the intersection of Haight and Scott Streets are indeed becoming one.

As we reported back in August of 2014, the New Santa Clara Market at 799 Haight St., on the south side of the block, is being folded into the Santa Clara Natural Organic Market at 798 Haight St., on the north side. This week, the New Santa Clara went dark, and its contents have been gutted. A dumpster is stationed out front.

Meanwhile, the liquor license of the New Santa Clara is being transferred to the new location, which is apparently now going by the name "Santa Clara Wholefoods" (to our knowledge there is no connection to the Whole Foods grocery chain). That license transfer process has taken several months longer than usual because it's happening within the Lower Haight Street Alcohol Restricted Use District (yes, that's a thing). Basically it means the transaction requires the extra step of a conditional use authorization from the Planning Department. That authorization finally came through last week.

As for what will become of 799 Haight St., that remains to be seen. The property had been popping up on Craigslist over the past few months, but has recently gone off market. Stay tuned...
