Street Construction Project Breaks Ground At Haight & AshburyPhoto: Amy Stephenson/Hoodline

The Upper Haight's year-and-a-half-long infrastructure overhaul, which commenced two months ago, is breaking ground this week farther west on Haight, between Ashbury and Clayton.

According to permitting signs, the work will result in a ten-day removal of parking spots on the south side of Haight between Ashbury and Clayton, from 7am-6pm on weekdays through June 26th.

According to the initial map of sewer and utilities overhauls for the project, the work isn't expected to proceed farther west beyond Ashbury.

The work coincides with another major sewer line overhaul kicking off this week in the Lower Haight.

The infrastructure project, contracted to Ghilotti Brothers, was plagued with issues in the Upper Haight during its early weeks, including a ruptured gas line and ensuing gas leak that required evacuating local businesses, and an extended sinkhole where the patched construction area in the middle of Haight Street gave way, creating a traffic hazard.

Those issues resulted in an informational neighborhood meeting a month ago with the Department of Public Works to discuss neighborhood concerns. Since then, there have been no further construction glitches for the Upper Haight's portion of the project.

Apart from minor parking and traffic diversions, the work between Ashbury and Clayton is not expected to affect utilities or service in the neighborhood. We'll provide updates as the work progresses, as well as notice of any delays.
