[Update] After being held in custody for 74 days, the District Attorney's office dropped all charges against Blake Angus.

According to evidence that came to light, Angus had an airtight alibi and a witness also ruled him out as being the suspect. For more, read Hoodline's story about his exoneration.

On Tuesday afternoon, Superior Court Judge Daniel Flores set bail at $50,000 for Blake Angus, 35, the suspect in a July 10th attack on a North Beach woman. The alleged assailant attacked a 27-year-old woman from behind, grabbing her by both shoulders and attempting to throw her to the ground. A group of North Beach neighbors intervened, stopping the attack. While the suspected attacker escaped, caught less than an hour later.

According to what was said in court, bail for a charge of false imprisonment is typically $15,000, but "the conduct involved in this case involves something significantly more dangerous," Flores said. As a result, a bail of $50,000 "would be more reasonable, given the facts in this case."

Angus pleaded not guilty and was told to report for a preliminary examination at 9am on July 27th in the same room, Department Nine of the Hall of Justice (850 Bryant St.)

Flores only allowed photographs of Angus from the back, so that no identifying features were revealed, but he appeared stocky under his orange jumpsuit and has short brown hair. He told SFPD officers that he resided at 720 Columbus Ave., but that's actually the headquarters of North Beach Citizens, a well-known homeless outreach group.

Angus had a long rap sheet and a history of arrests, according to Andrew Ganc Ganz, assistant district attorney. In 2003 and 2004, he was convicted in Oregon for possession of a controlled substance. He also has convictions of misdemeanor theft in 2012 and trespassing in 2013. His case was assigned to a public defender, Jennifer Noryko.
