Castro Crime And Safety: Robberies, Pride Stats, And Safety Volunteer TrainingPhoto: Zervas / Flickr

Two busy weekends in a row have kept the city and police force active, thanks to Pride and Fourth of July-related crowds and entertainment, alongside the usual dose of crime and safety news.

Police were on particularly high alert over the Fourth of July weekend, after the much-publicized shooting death at Pier 14 and subsequent robberies of news crews at gunpoint. The increased presence appears to have helped: most of the recent crime and safety news occurred two weekends ago, during Pride festivities, and the Castro has been relatively quiet otherwise.

This crime and safety update includes two Castro robbery incidents, reported crime numbers from Pride, and an update on a shooting during Pride at Civic Center.

Castro and Market Robbery

On Friday, June 26th at 10:52 pm, there was a robbery at Castro and Market streets. The 27-year-old male victim was approached from behind by two 25-year-old suspects, one female and one male, who tore his pants pocket and took his phone. He followed the suspects as they fled, and was held by one suspect while the other cut his hand with a knife. Both suspects then fled on foot, and the victim was left with a small laceration on his finger. No arrests have been made.

18th and Castro Robbery

Two days later, near 18th and Castro streets, there was another robbery at 3:30am. The 34-year-old male victim was talking to the suspect, a 20- to 25-year-old female, when she punched him in the face, took his phone, and fled the scene. No arrest has been made.

Pride Crime Stats Recap

For those interested in the overall state of crime and safety during Pride Weekend, the SFPD has compiled statistics in one place. For crimes officially tied to the Pride festivities (not including incidents in the Mission), the weekend resulted in 12 felonies, 13 misdemeanors, 21 public drunkenness arrests, and six handguns seized. For the most notable incident of the weekend, a shooting at Civic Center, there is now a suspect in custody.
