Cat Boarding May Soon Be Coming To The CastroPhotos: Steven Bracco/Hoodline

The Castro offers an overwhelming number of businesses that cater to furry canine companions, including recently-opened boutique dog gift shop DogoLove, dog-washing spot Mudpuppy's Tub & Scrub. supply shops Best in Show and Jeffrey's Natural Pet Foods, and dog-walkers The Fairy Dogfather and Fetchin' Bones. But when it comes to cats, there isn't much in the neighborhood—a void that new cat-boarding business The Kitty Chateau hopes to fill.

Earlier this month, the fledgling business took out a permit for the former home of travel agency Now, Voyager at 4406 18th St. (Now, Voyager, which closed amid controversy over an eviction, reopened in a new 19th Street location in January.) We weren't able to find any information on the owners, but a representative for the Planning Department confirmed that the space would be a cat-boarding service, which is why it requires a permit.

The project is still in the early stages of approval, and still needs to go before the Planning and Health departments. A notice on the door says that its application will be heard by the Director of Environmental Health tomorrow; another application is still under review with the Planning Department. Hoodline reached out to both departments, but we were told that it's still too early in the process to know if the project will be approved.

Cats have been trending in popularity in SF of late, thanks to events like Caturday at Dolores Park and businesses like the newly opened KitTea, San Francisco's first cat cafe. Now, it may be the Castro's turn.

We'll keep you up to date with new details on the project and how it progresses through the planning and approval process.
