We reported last week that Sunrise Deli appears to be shuttering its Haight Street store, with the 1671 Haight St. storefront now up for lease. After a conflicting report from a concerned reader, we're back with a full report.

In a phone conversation today from his Second Street restaurant, Khaled Ramadan, whose family owns Sunrise Deli's five Bay Area locations, confirmed that Sunrise was looking to close the location on Haight Street by selling off the remainder of its current five-year lease.

"We put the business for sale," Ramadan said, "that particular location, not necessarily Sunrise Deli."

What's on the auction block? The storefront, with its current lease, equipment, and the improvements Ramadan has made since assuming the lease three years ago.

"We've given it to our broker," Ramadan said, "and he's out trying to gauge what the interest level is like" for a new restaurant opportunity in the Upper Haight.

The family is looking to offload one of its locations not because of the rent, Ramadan said, but because his mother and father, who also participate in family-owned business, are getting older, and he's focusing on family priorities.

"Generally we're looking to downsize the business as a whole, so this is our first step in that," Ramadan said. The Haight Street store is Sunrise's newest; Ramadan said he would reassess how much further he wanted to downsize the business if and when the Haight Street location finds a buyer.

What kinds of possibilities are in the works?

"We haven't nailed down anybody in particular at the moment," Ramadan said, "but we are actively pursuing it."
