Flywheel Indoor Cycling Set To Pedal Into Downtown This YearPhotos: Flywheel Sports

Attention, fitness fans: Flywheel Sports is preparing to roll into One Market St. before the end of the year. The new location will be the Bay Area flagship for the international boutique fitness chain, which is centered around indoor cycling; it also has a location in Sunnyvale and plans to open in Walnut Creek in September.

The space at One Market will be about 5,000 square feet, which is on the larger side for Flywheel; most of the company's studios are 3,500–6,000 square feet, said Alana Radmin, vice president of communications. It will offer two entrances: one on Spear Street and one in the atrium of the One Market building.

Flywheel's cycling classes are choreographed, high-energy and quantitative. Calories burned, miles biked, average resistance, average speed and energy exerted are all recorded to allow performance tracking. “You can go back and see how you’ve performed in every single class you’ve ever taken," Radmin said. “People want to quantify their workouts. They want to know exactly what they’re doing and what they’re doing is working. They want to see real results, and this technology helps them see that.”

Flywheel lets riders anonymously compare their stats to others in the class if they choose to opt in, with the class leaders displayed on TorqBoard flatscreen readouts as riders pedal. "We were really at the forefront of incorporating technology into boutique fitness,” Radmin said. Another advantage is that the bikes are on stadium platforms, so all seats have a clear view to the instructor—no peering around someone's head.

Radmin said the Market Street location also will include a FlyBarre studio, offering total body sculpting classes. "It’s a great complement to indoor cycling," Radmin said. "It helps create lean, long muscles." Patrons might even get to take a class with Flywheel cofounder and creative director Ruth Zukerman on-site at some point; Radmin said she travels extensively, to teach in the company's various markets.

Radmin said it's too early to say exactly how many bikes will be on-site or how big the locker rooms will be. Like the company's other locations, locker rooms will offer spa-like amenities, including Bliss products; complimentary cycling shoe rentals and towels are also included.

Prices for workouts vary, depending on if you buy a "founding" membership before opening, packages of multiple rides or single rides, or a monthly membership. Expect a post-opening price of about $28 per ride or $250 per month.
