Marengo On The Alley Bringing Sliders And Whiskey To FiDiPhotos: Geri Koeppel/Hoodline

Marengo on the Alley is coming to 531 Commercial St. between Sansome and Leidesdorff. It's a sister business to Cow Hollow's Marengo on Union (1980 Union St.), which opened in 2010 and is known for its extensive slider menu, popular weekend brunch and happy hour, and long list of whiskeys.

Marengo management didn't respond to repeated requests for information, but a sign on the door promises a "relaxed, yet sophisticated place to enjoy craft beer, delicious wines, an extensive whiskey list from all over the world and other great spirits, all alongside a menu of fresh, local and perfectly paired ingredients." It also says the Texas-reared chef, Rayna Toomajian, will include a few Southern touches.

The sign also said the new location will be ready to open its doors on Commercial "in the coming weeks." There's no indication of what the hours will be, however.

Marengo on the Alley is replacing Sydney Town Tavern, which closed earlier this year. Named after a rowdy street gang that terrorized and burned down the city several times during the Barbary Coast era, it was open for less than two years. At the time of its closure, it had just two-and-a-half stars on Yelp, with reviewers citing a loud crowd and less-than-stellar food. Prior to Sydney Town, the space housed longtime FiDi bar Gio's, which closed in the spring of 2013 after 25 years in business.
