North Beach Baking Co. Says It's Closed For RemodelingPhotos: Geri Koeppel/Hoodline

It turns out the rumors about the closure of North Beach Baking Co. were true, at least in part. The bakery's retail shop has been papered over, with a sign that says, "Closed for remodeling. Exciting bakery concept coming soon!!"

On August 4th, we reported that the future of the bakery was uncertain, amidst a flurry of rumors indicating the place was closing. A bakery has existed in that location since 1917, so neighbors were sad to see it go, even if several told us they wouldn't be unhappy to see new ownership.

At that time, we spoke to someone a self-identified manager named Tony, who refused to give his last name. He was adamant that the bakery would not close. He said the small storefront would be closing for three extra hours in the afternoon for temporary remodeling, before returning to its regular 6am–6pm schedule.

We went back to the bakery to find some more answers, but both the retail store and the back baking area were locked up. Multiple voicemail messages have also not been returned. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything definitive.
