Playa Pop-Up Debuts At Second Act TodayPhoto:  BLM Nevada / Flickr

The Haight has long been a shopping destination for people headed to Burning Man (which takes place this year from Aug. 30th - Sept. 7th), with stores like Mendel's and Cal Surplus getting lots of action.

Now, there's a new source for your Playa needs. Paul Power, proprietor of playaplace.com, began selling his wares last year out of Second Act (1727 Haight St.) in the weeks leading up to the festival. We checked in to learn more about the returning pop-up, which aims to satisfy your Burning desires with clothes, beach cruisers, accessories, camping supplies, and more.

Power says that he wanted to create a single place for burners to stock up.

"Most people have to resort to going to Walmart, Target, etc. for everything that they need," Power told us via email. "So my website is set up for people to buy and pick-up in SF conveniently on Haight St. My concept is especially good for people that don't have time to shop and run around."

Power also says the format of the Playa Place pop-up is uniquely communal.

"I also showcase other unique local fashion designers and vendors. Playa place is run like a Co-op so we all pitch in and promote, and I keep the rental price low so that it gives small and local fashion vendors a chance to be selling on Haight St. So what we have on Haight is something a little more unique and organic than most of the fashion up there, and better bikes than what people usually have to resort to."

The bikes, Power says, are sourced with love, bought used when possible for affordability, and hand-picked to be unique, artistic, and American-designed. "Not to mention that I'll custom piece together a nice psychedelic fur bike."

This is the second year for the Haight Street pop-up. Jack Rix, owner of Second Act, described last year's pop-up as "fabulously successful," and they're expecting an even better turn out this year. It will run today from 11am to 7pm, as well as on Aug. 15th & 22nd, and straight through Aug. 27th to 29th.
