Castro Community Raises Funds For Second-Grader Diagnosed With Brain TumorPhoto: Zamora Moon Facebook Page

Hoodline reader Charles B. sent in a tip about fundraising on behalf of a local second-grader who was recently diagnosed with a brain tumor. Seven-year-old Zamora Moon attends Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy (HMCRA), where her mother, Marissa Martinez, teaches kindergarten.

In July, Zamora was diagnosed with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (DIPG), a rare, incurable tumor in the brainstem, near the top of the spinal cord. DIPG primarily affects young children (it's typically diagnosed around ages 5-7), and fewer than 10 percent of affected children live more than two years with it. Zamora is currently undergoing radiation treatments to battle the tumor, but as Martinez states in the video, "the diagnosis was sudden and the prognosis is terminal."

Using a GoFundMe page, Martinez reached out to the community for financial support. In addition to covering medical expenses, she's looking to take the fall semester off, in order to support Zamora during her treatments. The response has been enormous, with over $77,000 raised in 12 days; Martinez's goal is $100,000, and fundraising continues.

Ron Machado, the principal of HMCRA, sent a letter to the school community encouraging them to support the family. "I have heard many times how strong the Harvey Milk Civil Rights Academy community is, and I have thus far experienced this to be true. Together, we are stronger and we can make a difference. I am sending my positive thoughts and energy to [Zamora] with a belief that she will beat this tumor and that she will be able to enjoy the innocence of childhood that she deserves."
