Today: Memphis Minnie's Celebrates Bacon Day With Special Menu(Photo: Jennie Butler/Hoodline)

If you enjoy bacon and kitschy food holidays, then today is your day.

That’s right, in recognition of International Bacon Day (which, depending on who you ask, is today or next Saturday), Memphis Minnie’s (576 Haight St.) is offering an extensive menu of bacon-centric fare to mark the occasion.

This is Minnies' third annual Bacon Day celebration. The idea came from manager Tom Campbell, who came across Bacon Day during a routine web search for obscure holidays. That year, Minnie’s tried out both Pi Day and Bacon Day. “We thought, anything that celebrates bacon—we can get behind that,” said Campbell. Bacon Day did better, so they made it an annual celebration.

For today's menu, expect BBQ staples—bacon mac n' cheese, corn dogs, pork burgers—along with more creative bacon pairings, like fried bacon deviled eggs, candied pork belly banh mi, bacon brussels sprouts, and honeyed bacon ice cream.

Even plain 'ol bacon won't cut it: look out for "bacon wrapped bacon", a sort-of bacon skewer that is deep fried and served with white sauce.

Campbell is especially jazzed on the OMG Burger, a ground pork and bacon patty stuffed with pulled pork shoulder then topped with bacon jam, pimento cheese and fried onions. Last year’s burgers were a surprise hit, selling out in the first hour and a half. So this year the kitchen is better prepared, said Campbell, with “12 full [pork] bellies on hand.”

Memphis Minnie’s will be celebrating Bacon Day during their regular hours today: 11am to 10pm.
