Area Q Parking Enforcement Begins Today (Sort Of)Photo: Jennie Butler/Hoodline

A reminder for Lower Haight, NoPa and Alamo Square residents: as of today, residential parking permits (RPPs) are required in Area Q, a 50-block zone between Masonic and Webster, and Golden Gate and Page.

So officially, you must now have a Residential Parking Permit posted on your vehicle to park on any of the blocks highlighted below for more than two hours during the day (either 8am-6pm or 9am-8pm, depending on location).

But there's a big, temporary exception.

"For the first week, parking control officers (PCOs) will begin to place courtesy notices on cars that do not have an Area Q RPP permit," according to Paul Rose of the SFMTA. "Over the next two weeks, PCOs will issue warnings. They will begin to issue citations starting September 21st."

Those who already have their Area Q RPP, for which applications opened in May, won't need a new permit for another 15 months; the permits will go annual on December 1st, 2016. Locals still in need of a residential permit can still apply for one here for $111. Residents can also apply for up to three permits for home medical caregivers, and one permit for childcare providers. Temporary daily and weekly permits for use by visitors or rental cars are also available.

Businesses in the permit area are also included, and can apply for one permit for a personal vehicle and up to three permits for commercial vehicles. More info on the various permits can be found here.

Scoot, a transportation company with approximately 3,000 users in Area Q, will not need to equip their vehicles with permits. According to the Examiner, the SFMTA launched a program last week that exempts "small, all-electric, two-wheeled mopeds from parking permit requirements."

The SFMTA is still deciding whether or not to increase parking limits to four hours on blocks with faith-based community centers. The SFMTA held a public hearing on the church issue in July, and residents will have another chance to discuss the issue at a board meeting this month (date TBD).

If you haven't yet applied for your Area Q RPP yet and want one before ticketing begins on September 21st, your best bet is to apply for one in-person at the SFMTA Customer Service Center at 11 South Van Ness.
