(Upper) Haight Street might finally have a Japanese restaurant in the works.

Earlier this month, a business permit was filed for 1793 Haight St., currently Great Indian Food, under the name Ginza Japanese Restaurant. As tipster Sung J. notes, a liquor license transfer application has appeared in the window, also bearing the Ginza name.

Great Indian's storefront, which opened two years ago, went on the market last November. It's unclear whether or not Ginza of Haight Street will be affiliated with the Ginza Japanese Restaurant currently operating out of Jack London Square in Oakland: representatives at both Great Indian and Ginza in Oakland were unable to confirm the connection.

Behind the new operation is Thai Eatery LLC, which appears to own no other restaurants in the Bay Area, although the address on file for the operation is the same as that of Thai restaurant Chai-Yo on Polk Street. Phornthip Korkiatnun and Ittiruj Niamchan are listed on the restaurant's liquor license application.

If you, like some of Great Indian's avid fans, are going to miss the restaurant once it's gone, stop by soon: According to a representative from Great Indian, Ginza is set to assume management of the space in the first week of November.
