Inner Sunset Crime: Hot Prowl Burglaries, Armed Struggle Caught On VideoPhoto: Eric Fischer/Flickr

According to the statistics, auto theft and burglaries are the leading types of crime in Cole Valley and Inner Sunset, but hot prowl burglaries (where a perpetrator steals from an occupied home) continue to be reported regularly.

Here's the latest rundown of recent crime in the area, as reported by the SFPD:

At 10am on October 2nd, a woman who lives on the 1200 block of 8th Avenue called police after discovering that the communal laundry room appeared to be ransacked. According to a report, the woman confronted a man on the property who claimed he was there to "check the garbage for his cousin." After the victim noticed that the perpetrator was wearing her roommate's sweater, she flagged down a passing officer, who took the suspect into custody.

Later that night, a man and a woman on Hippy Hill in Golden Gate Park reported that three men robbed them after soliciting marijuana. Victims told officers from Park Station that the suspects threatened them with a gun (not seen) before taking a mobile phone, a wallet, a purse and gift cards and fleeing on foot.

On October 4th, a resident on 23rd Avenue called Taraval Station to report the overnight theft of bags from a garage that contained gaming systems, laptops, shoes and other belongings. According to the report, the victims noticed that their property was missing the next morning.

The same day, someone living on the 1300 block of 12th Avenue called police at 4:15am after being awakened by noises in their garage. After investigating, the victim found their garage door open and the interior light of their car lit. Eventually, the victim determined that their garage door opener was missing.

On October 7th at 11:50am, a man walking on Ashton Avenue was robbed of his cell phone, wallet and backpack by two suspects in a silver 4-door Hyundai. According to the victim, one of the suspects exited the vehicle, brandished a knife and snatched his backpack before patting him down for a cell phone and wallet.

On October 11th, a resident near Buena Vista Park reported that someone "reached into a front entryway" to steal a wallet and purse around 7am. No suspect has been identified.

This last incident occurred in the Outer Sunset, but given the shocking nature of the crime, we're including it here: on September 28th, an armed suspect entered a garage at 1300 La Playa St. to attempt a home-invasion robbery. As security video shows (below), the intended victim and his assailant engaged in a desperate, protracted struggle over the gun.

Eventually, the victim got control of the gun before the suspect fled on foot. If you have any information about this incident, please contact Taraval Station at SFPDTaravalStation [AT] sfgov.org or call (415) 242-9753 to leave an anonymous tip.
