Man Seriously Injured In Beating Near Grant & Vallejo [Updated]Photo: Geri Koeppel/Hoodline

A beating outside of a North Beach restaurant around 12:45am Monday left a 59-year-old man with life-threatening injuries.

The victim was eating in a restaurant on the 1200 block of Grant Avenue near Vallejo Street when an argument broke out between him and two other men in their twenties and a third suspect, age unknown. They went outside and the first suspect punched the man in the face, knocking him to the ground.

The other two suspects continued to attack the man, who lost consciousness. He was found with a large cut to the back of his head, facial cuts and bruises and a possible traumatic brain injury. He was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. The suspects fled.

Update, 10/20: We asked SFPD for more information about the victim and his condition, and were told while victim information is not public record, the man is from Vallejo and has been released from the hospital.

We got further information from Timothy Doyle, who posted on the North Beach News Facebook page and emailed us an account that said the beating happened outside his window. "San Francisco Police Department responded well," he wrote. "The guy was bleeding hard from the head and his dentures were on the street. His glasses were smashed."

Doyle said that the altercation happened outside the King of Thai Noodle House, and that the block of Grant near Vallejo is getting worse. "On July 5th, a young kid fired five rounds of a 9mm gun right past my window," he wrote on Facebook. "The San Francisco Police Department gang task force did great work and caught the guy and the girl he was with that night. They are in SF County [Jail] and I have been subpoenaed as a witness."

Another neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, has long had concerns as well. The neighbor said she's talked to SFPD, but "we haven't seen any improvement," citing ongoing issues with drug dealing, fights, people camping out, gunfire, muggings and assaults on that particular block.

"It's mostly late-night. I'd like to see more lighting there. I'd like to see cameras there. I would like to see more police coverage there late at night." The alley on Fresno Street, mid-block between Vallejo and Columbus, is of particular concern. "That alley's dark, it's not activated," she said. "I don't know how you have a block that's always been this way, and nothing ever gets resolved."
