It's been almost a year since construction on the Sunset Tunnel, which connects the N-Judah from Duboce Avenue to Cole Valley, first got started. Back then, the estimated completion date fell somewhere around summer 2015, which, as you may have noticed, has already come and gone.
The project, which involves replacing tracks, upgrading overhead wiring, and retrofitting retaining walls and foundations, kicked off with a whimper, delayed from its planned September 2014 start date until that November. Noise complaints derailed the project in late January, with work resuming in late March and continuing in fits and starts throughout the year.
"To ensure we keep the city moving, construction work had to be rescheduled to accommodate concurrent major events in the city," states the SFMTA on the project website. That means is that as construction resumes again this weekend, the project is only 60 percent completed, with five more weekends of work in the offing. "We are working diligently with the contractor to expedite the construction, and will do the best we can to finish the work as quickly as possible," the SFMTA states.
This weekend's work begins at 2am on Saturday and continues until 3:30am Monday morning. Expect the work to be "audible" throughout the weekend, though noise-control protocols will be in effect. Parking will also be impacted on Duboce from Steiner to Scott, and on both sides of Carl from Clayton to Cole.
As usual, shuttle buses will run in place of the N-Judah up to Church & Duboce, the transfer point between shuttles and N cars.
Though still subject to the mercurial nature of San Francisco infrastructure projects, the next set of weekend construction dates are tentatively scheduled for Nov. 7th, Nov. 14th and Nov. 21st. Weekend work will continue into early next year.
