Fell And Gough Intersection Finally Getting A CrosswalkPhotos: Nuala Sawyer/Hoodline

It's been a year and a half since the SFMTA held a hearing about installing a crosswalk on the western side of the intersection of Fell and Gough streets. On Tuesday, the city finally broke ground on the project.

Hayes Valley's former history as part of a freeway has created several dangerous intersections in the neighborhood, and Fell and Gough has posed a particular annoyance for pedestrians, many of whom are forced to cross to the opposite side of Fell in order to cross Gough. Some, ignoring the signs, have dangerously walked into oncoming traffic.

SFMTA spokesperson Paul Rose confirmed this morning that the crosswalk is being constructed, and also told us that two additional bulbouts will be added on the southeast and southwest sides of the intersection.

Bulbout construction should last through the middle of next week. After that, new sign posts and pedestrian and vehicle signals will be added, and the crosswalk will be painted. The project should be wrapped up in two to three weeks.
