Since late last year, Umberto Gibin and Staffan Terje—owners of Financial District Italian restaurants Perbacco and Barbacco—have been preparing to open a modern European brasserie in the former 'witchcraft space at 868 Mission St., adjacent to the Westfield San Francisco Centre. Today, the duo announced that their first SoMa outpost, Volta, will open in the first half of December.

While construction on the space continues and an exact opening date hasn't been set, the team divulged a few more details in a press release issued today.

Volta, which means 'a change in direction' in Latin, will stray from the Italian focus of its Financial District counterparts. Executive chef Terje, who is originally from Sweden, will incorporate his Scandinavian heritage and classic French training into the menu, featuring shellfish, classic brasserie selections, Swedish-style charcuterie, and a selection of cold and hot appetizers and entrees. Perbacco and Barbacco's award-winning pastry chef, Laura Cronin, will oversee the dessert menu.

Volta will serve classic and craft cocktails, with the latter featuring housemade aquavits. An extensive wine list will be predominately focused on French wines from the Rhone Valley, Loire Valley and South of France.

Gibin and Terje are working with CCS Architecture, which also designed Perbacco and Barbacco, to give the former cafe a sophisticated, warm and modern look. The restaurant, flanked on two sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, will be sectioned off into three distinct areas, including a mezzanine. Highlights of the interior include a cast concrete bar with a soaring illuminated back-bar display, and touches of wood, steel, brass, and geometric lines.

Once Volta debuts next month, it will be open daily for lunch from 11:30am-2:30pm and dinner from 5:30-10pm. For updates on the opening, follow Volta on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
