North Beach is a hotbed for adult entertainment today, but what put it on the map for that was silicone-enhanced stripper Carol Doda, who started topless dancing in 1964 at the Condor Club (560 Broadway). SFGate reports Doda died at a hospital on Nov. 9th of complications related to kidney failure.

Throughout the years, she remained active as a TV spokesmodel, rock band founder and lingerie shop owner, and was a fixture at North Beach spots like Tosca and Gino & Carlo. A memorial service is tentatively planned for Nov. 22nd or 23rd at Tupelo (1337 Grant Ave.).
