While we don't report on every crime, we do our best to keep you informed of major crimes and safety concerns in the neighborhood. Here's a selection of crimes reported around the Tenderloin over the past two weeks. All details are pulled from the SFPD's daily crime recaps, unless otherwise noted.


Self-Inflicted Shooting

A man, 41, shot himself in the thigh at about 11:30pm Nov. 16th on the 300 block of Ellis Street. Witnesses saw the victim on the fourth floor of the building, heard a gunshot, then saw the victim on floor but could not provide a description of a suspect, according to police. Further investigation revealed that the gunshot was self-inflicted, and the victim was arrested on outstanding warrants and additional gun-related charges.

Assault With A Deadly Weapon

A man, 32, was attacked with a taser-like baton in a shop at about 10am Nov. 13th on the 300 block of Turk Street. Two male suspects, ages 25 and 22, were in an altercation with the victim inside the store. When the victim walked toward the suspects, one suspect walked from behind counter and struck the victim in the head with the baton. Officers arrested both suspects and the victim was transported to the hospital.

Street Robberies and Assaults

A man, 27, was robbed at 1:35am Nov. 21st at Market and Golden Gate. The victim was walking when the suspect, a 54-year-old man, began following him and then asked him for a dollar. When the victim pulled out his wallet, the suspect grabbed it and ran. He then chased the suspect and the SFPD took the suspect into custody.

A man, 22, was attacked and robbed at about 3am Nov. 19th at Eddy and Larkin. The victim was approached from behind by three suspects, ages 28 to 33. One suspect asked to use the victim's cellphone and the victim declined. All three suspects then hit him on the back of the head until he loss consciousness, took his phone and fled the scene. None were arrested.

At about 10:40pm Nov. 19th, a woman was struck on the head with a bottle and robbed. The victim was at Eddy and Hyde Streets when the suspect, a 25-year-old woman, approached and struck her on the side of the head with a bottle. The suspect then reached into the victim's bra and stole her phone. The victim was transported to the hospital and the suspect was not arrested.

At about 11:30pm that same night, a 49-year-old man was attacked and robbed while heading down the escalator at Hallidie Plaza. Five suspects approached the victim from behind, and when the victim took out his wallet, one suspect took it and fled. 

A man, 53, was beaten and robbed at 11:20pm Nov. 18th. Two suspects hit the victim in the back of his head with wooden objects until he lost consciousness, according to police. The victim reported feeling both suspects search his pockets; he was transferred to the hospital and neither suspect was arrested.

A man was threatened and robbed at 6am Nov. 15th at Larkin and Eddy. The suspect, a 40-year-old man, threatened to stab the victim if he did not hand over his property. The suspect then reached into the victim's pocket and took his cellphone. The victim did not see a weapon and was not harmed; the suspect was not apprehended.

At 4:20pm Nov. 13th, a 55-year-old man was attacked and robbed at O’Farrell and Mason. Two suspects, men ages 40 and 60, approached the victim, struck him several times and fled with his wallet and cellphone. No arrest was made. 

At about 7:45pm Nov. 12th, a 29-year-old man was restrained by three suspects and robbed at Market and Charles J. Brenham Place. The victim was on his cellphone walking down the street when one suspect snatched the phone. Another suspect then held the victim down while the third suspect searched his backpack and took two laptops. All three fled and were not arrested.

Cyclist Collision 

As we previously reported, a cyclist suffered a minor head injury at about 6:45pm Nov. 12th at O'Farrell and Hyde Streets. Traveling at a high rate of speed downhill, the cyclist ran a red light and collided with a vehicle.


To close out on a lighter Tenderloin police-related note, the district's police station will host a toy drive and Christmas kick-off celebration at Boeddeker Park from 11am-2pm Dec. 5th. They'll provide games (with prizes), food and entertainment for children under 12; stop by to donate a toy or two for the holiday season.
