Union Square Tour Bus Driver Blames Mechanical Failure For CrashPhoto: Brian Kendzior/Twitter

Kenneth Malvar, the 52-year-old driver of the tour bus that crashed near Union Square on Friday, made a statement from his hospital bed yesterday. According to his lawyer, Robert Cartwright, Malvar was driving when he heard an explosion under the bus, and its brake pedal stopped working. Unable to slow the bus using the emergency brake, he tried to clip parked cars and construction buffers before turning into the Post Street scaffolding.

20 people were injured in the crash, including bus passengers and nearby cyclists and pedestrians. Malvar was one of several who sustained serious injuries; he incurred broken ribs and a broken ankle. Though no one died in the accident, the condition of the other injured victims is unclear, and the crash is still under investigation. (Associated Press/NYTimes, via SFist)
