Chron: Hall Of Justice Plagued With Urine-Dripping Ceilings, Rats, RoachesPhoto: Christopher Matson/Flickr

Recent talk surrounding the Hall of Justice (850 Bryant St.) has dealt with the proposed construction of a new jail down the street—a move that has met with controversy. But some of the building's non-incarcerated occupants, including the D.A.’s office, have told the Chronicle that they're fed up with working there, too.

In addition to being at seismic risk in the event of an earthquake (the reason cited for moving the jail), the HOJ has a number of icky issues, from a ceiling that occasionally drips with urine to rats that chew on criminal records and leave droppings in their wake. "Lots of cockroaches," regular power failures, and a recent sewage-pipe burst are also among the complaints.

The city's director of capital planning says that replacing the Hall of Justice all at once would cost $1.6 billion, and the city can’t afford it. The D.A.'s office and others will be moved out of the building in three to five years, but to where is currently unclear; there’s also no plan for where the offices will move if an earthquake destroys the building before then.
