After lying dormant for most of the year following the dismissal of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society in the spring, the city has announced that the Old Mint will live again—with a local events management firm at the helm until plans for the endangered historic landmark's future are solidified.
San Francisco Business Times reports that the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development has issued a request for proposals, seeking a partner that can help the city restore and activate the Mint Plaza building with cultural programming.
While the city works with this partner to devise long-term plans for financing, rehabilitation, operations and programming at the site, OEWD has contracted Activate San Francisco Events to host community events, manage rentals, begin improving the site with updates to the landscaping, exterior lighting, elevator and oversee daily maintenance. Ken Rich, director of development at OEWD, told the Chronicle that Activate will likely occupy the building over the next couple of years before the restoration project commences.
The first community event hosted by Activate will be held March 4-6 and include a San Francisco history fair — likely similar to the annual history expo the previous tenant was known for.
