Castro crime reports have held steady since our last recap. This time around, we saw robberies, a shooting, and local attempts to better understand and address crime and safety issues in the neighborhood. All reports come via the SFPD, unless otherwise noted.

Taxi-Hailer Assaulted And Robbed

On January 7th at 2am a man, 48, was trying to hail a taxi at 17th & Castro when three suspects (one female and two males of unknown ages) approached him from behind and knocked him over. Once he fell, the three punched and kicked him before taking his phone, backpack , and money and fleeing on foot. The victim was treated for his injuries and no arrests were made.

18th Street Shooting Victim

A 21-year-old man went to the hospital in life-threatening condition on January 10th after an incident that took place near 18th & Dolores at 1:22am (yes, we know this is considered more "Mission" than "Castro," but it's relevant to border-dwellers). Officers found him with a gunshot wound to his chest with no known suspect present. No suspect has been identified, nor have any additional details around the shooting been revealed.

Argument Leads To Assault With Knife

An argument at 16th and Pond got heated between two men on January 11th at 11:32am. During the verbal altercation, one man, 25-35, drew a knife and stabbed the other man, 40. The assailant fled on foot in an unknown direction and the victim was treated for injuries to his arm. No arrest was made.

Robbery At Knifepoint

On January 12th near 16th & Church, a man, 70, was robbed at 1:45pm. Two mean, 18-25, approached him and brandished a knife. They then stole his money and phone and fled on foot. No arrests were made and the victim sustained no injuries.

Hancock Hot Prowl

A woman, 60, heard a noise in her garage on January 17th at 10:15am near Hancock and Sanchez. Upon investigating the sound, she witnessed a man of unknown age running out of her garage. No arrest was made and the woman couldn't identify if anything had been stolen.

Hat Robbery Leads To Fight

On January 18th, a 49-year-old man was walking with his bicycle near 18th Street and Hartford around 8pm. A younger man in his 30s punched the older man and began to fight him. The suspect subsequently stole the victim's hat and fled on foot. The victim followed the suspect and began to fight with him. This time, the suspect attempted to steal the victim's bicycle, but eventually fled with only the hat. No arrest was made and the victim had a swollen cheek but was not transported to any hospital.

District 8 Safety Meeting Recap

On January 14th, we checked out a safety meeting arranged by District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener. The focus of the meeting, which was attended by Wiener, the SFPD, Mayor Ed Lee, and other guests, was to try to address concerns over safety issues. Much of the concern brought forth from attendees focused on homeless individuals and encampments. Read more about the event in our recap here.
