Hyde Street Post Office To Stay Put Through February, Possibly LongerPhoto: Brittany Hopkins/Hoodline

Despite approved plans to raze 101 Hyde St. in favor of 85 new residential units, the post office won't be vacating the address until March at the earliest.

The existing lease at 101 Hyde has been extended through February, according to Augustine Ruiz, a corporate communications manager for the U.S. Postal Service. The USPS' plan is still to move to another Tenderloin location, and negotiations with two potential spaces are underway. Depending on the success of those negotiations, the lease may need to be extended again come March.

As we reported in November, the Postal Service's ultimate goal is to move the Hyde Street location's P.O. boxes to its Fox Plaza location—without altering customers' addresses. The new Tenderloin location will offer general delivery only.
