Man Kicks Off New Year By Driving Through Sunset TunnelPhoto: Tipster Nick M.

It's a brand-new year, and with it comes optimistic resolutions and fresh starts. But for one pair, the year didn't get off to a particularly auspicious start.

According to local tipster Nick M., a male driver and his female passenger took a perilous journey last night through the Sunset Tunnel—which, as you well know, is closed to vehicle traffic—and ended up mired in gravel on the Cole Valley side:

There is a car that came in the Sunset Tunnel through the Duboce Park side and got stuck at the exit on the Cole Valley side in the gravel. The gate was also locked so they couldn't have gotten out anyhow. They were spinning gravel for about 20 minutes trying to get unstuck to no avail. Cops are now on scene, interviewing and trying to figure situation out. Sounds like one guy and one girl, both relatively younger, not sure if alcohol was involved. The guy said he "took the wrong exit, and was driving, then it turned into track." The girl was repeating "how embarrassed" she was.

It's not the first time a car has attempted to drive into the tunnel: in June 2013 and February 2014, pedestrians came to the aid of drivers stuck trying to enter the tunnel from the Duboce side. However, if our tipster's account is accurate, it would be the first time that we've seen a car drive all the way through the tunnel.

"The Cole Valley incident finally wrapped up about 3:30am," Nick wrote. "Male driver was arrested (not sure for what), female passenger took an Uber away, car was towed."

And with that, we welcome you to 2016.
