FiDi & North Beach Crime Roundup: Cameraman Mugging, Hit & Run, Encampment FirePhoto: Geri Koeppel/Hoodline

We usually recap a few things from the SFPD Central Station newsletter that comes out on Thursdays, but Capt. David Lazar has been busy with Super Bowl City at the foot of Market Street, Justin Herman Plaza and Sue Bierman Park. There's been a huge public safety presence there and throughout the Embarcadero and FiDi all week.

SFPD's media department sent an email on Friday night with a short statement about activity at Super Bowl City, which reads in part, "Preliminary recap of incidents: SFPD made one arrest for public intoxication and two arrests for misdemeanor battery (separate incidents)."

And, we noticed a big increase in vehicle and foot traffic on Friday after an incredibly light week downtown, so be extra cautious whether you're walking, cycling or driving this weekend. North Beach bars are expecting big crowds for Sunday's big game, too, so if you plan to do any drinking, keep your wits about you so you don't become a victim.

Now for a very brief crime roundup from the past week:

Hit-and-run suspects flee on foot

A 2007 Gray SUV with two females in their twenties inside struck barricades near Geary and Stockton streets in Union Square at 6:49pm Feb. 2nd, and and hit a man, age 41. He suffered pain to his legs and a head injury and was transported to the hospital. The suspects fled on foot.

Cameraman visiting for Super Bowl mugged for equipment

A 45-year-old man was loading filming equipment into his vehicle at Hyde and Lombard streets (at the top of the "Crooked Street") at 9:30pm Feb. 2nd when two male suspects, age 18–25, approached him from behind with a handgun. They took his camera, laptop, tablet computer, two jackets, backpack, medication and keys, and fled southbound on Hyde in a dark gray four-door sedan with tinted windows.

SFGate reported the victim, Marcus Richardson, is a cameraman from TV station WBBM in Chicago which was in town to cover Super Bowl 50. It also noted that similar attacks have prompted some news outlets to hire guards to accompany reporters to the scene. Blogger Robert Feder on robertfeder.com reprinted Richardson's Facebook post about the incident:

And in other news I got robbed shooting a beauty shot. They took everything. I am at a complete loss for words and I am sad beyond belief. This is the lowest I’ve ever been doing this job. I am ok they only threatened with a gun. I’m just disappointed and now I have no gear, house/car keys, medication and whatever else was in my backpack. Criminals suck.

Man sets another man's encampment on fire

A man, age unknown, got into an argument with another man, age 30, at 7:57am Feb. 3rd near Tillman Place and Sutter Street in Union Square. The suspect left the scene only to return to set the victim's encampment on fire. He then fled in an unknown direction.
