Ijji Sushi Opens Tonight On DivisaderoPhoto: Andrew Dudley/Hoodline

The former home of KK Cafe has undergone quite a transformation since Ijji, a new sushi venture, took over the space last May. For much of that time, the storefront has been covered in black plywood, which was removed last week to reveal a completely new exterior. The door has been moved, and the black and white tiled floors are gone; in their place is a chic and modern Japanese restaurant, with clay walls and bamboo shades.

Head chef Billy Kong told us last month that the restaurant was close to opening, and tonight is the big night.

Kong hails from Noe Valley's popular Saru, and Iiji's menu is not entirely different. It consists of small dishes and a strong focus on nigiri—no rolls. "I just wanted to do a simple, nigiri-only restaurant," he told us. 95 percent of the fish served will be sourced directly from Japan.

Manager Katie Yim is looking forward to joining the new wave of restaurants opening on Divisadero this year. "We're very excited. When we first opened Saru in Noe Valley, the neighborhood was very much like this, quiet and residential. We wanted wanted to open Ijji in a similar neighborhood, so that everyone can become our friends and family," she said.

The restaurant will be open from 5-10pm, Tuesday through Sunday. It has only 17 seats, and the seven at the sushi bar are reservation-only, so prospective diners may want to call ahead (415-658-7388) to beat the crowd.
