Memorial For North Beach Fixture Roy Mottini Set For Valentine's DayPhoto: Romalyn Schmaltz/Hoodline

On Valentine's Day this Sunday, February 14th, Caffé Trieste will hold a memorial for North Beach mainstay Roy Mottini, who peacefully passed away in his room at the Golden Eagle Hotel in early January. Mottini, a San Francisco native, was known throughout the neighborhood for his snappy dress, sense of humor and often unpredictable nature.

The memorial will begin at 4pm, starting with a marching band procession from his former residence at 402 Broadway (at the corner of Montgomery Street), and proceeding to Caffé Trieste at 601 Vallejo St. There will be live music by Surfer Roma and a chance for guests to share their favorite Roy stories.

Diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic in his early twenties, Roy could often be seen in the neighborhood shouting obscenities and waving his cane at passersby. But he was well taken care of by people in the neighborhood, including District 3 Supervisor Aaron Peskin, Caffe Trieste manager and co-owner Ida Zoubi, and several officers from the San Francisco Police Department at Central Station. Mottini made North Beach his home, and his friends and neighbors became his family. (See our recent profile of Roy, here.)

Mottini is survived by his sister Linda, and her husband Bob.
