Urban Bazaar, the Inner Sunset boutique specializing in Fair Trade goods and handcrafted products by local artists, has announced plans to close its doors on Sunday, March 6th. According to a parting email owner Briana Bers sent to customers this week, Local Take, the Castro gallery and gift shop, will open a second location in the space at 1371 9th Ave. in mid-April.

Founded by local artist Bers, Urban Bazaar carries art, clothing, jewelry, personal care items and other products. For the last five years, Bers has also staged the Vagabond Indie Craft Fair, a showcase for local crafters looking to launch new products.

"Due to a growing family, the craziness of San Francisco life and rents and the need for more space, we will be closing up shoppe and moving out of this beautiful and crazy city," Bers wrote in her goodbye announcement. "The denial has worn off and it is time to face reality."

Customers who have Urban Bazaar store credit or gift certificates are encouraged to redeem them at Local Take, the Castro shop owned by Jenn Meyer, a friend of Bers. Between now and March 6th, Urban Bazaar is holding a red tag sale; selected items will be 20 percent off.

Bers thanked customers for their support and expressed hopes to return to San Francisco with a new business in the future. "Until then, we wish you the happiest of days and shall miss you all, so much," she wrote. "Thank you for the amazing memories and love." According to Meyer, Bers plans to return to her home state of Minnesota.

Meyer, who opened Local Take in the Castro in 2013, said she and Bers are longtime friends and colleagues. "We came up together in the maker community and have kept in close touch as we opened and ran our own storefronts," said Meyer.

"When she told me last month that she had made the hard decision to move her family back to Minnesota and close down the shop, we immediately started brainstorming on how we could keep supporting the local maker community in the Inner Sunset," she added. "I had already been exploring options to open a second location in 2016, so this seemed like a perfect opportunity."

"Local Take Inner Sunset will be the same concept as Local Take Castro," said Meyer, although the specific goods may vary. According to Bers' note, the new store's target opening date is April 15th.
