What Does The Haight Need Now?Photo: Camden Avery/Hoodline

It's been a hot minute since the last time we checked in, dear readers, to hear what the Upper Haight is missing.

As reader Laura commented the other day, "I wish Hoodline would do another The Upper Haight Needs _____ type post. It's interesting to see what people were hoping for four years ago and which of things really have come to fruition."

So, let's take a look.

The Haight has seen the entry of a host of urban streetwear shops in recent years. What else have we accomplished?

  • VeganBurg is in the running for a semi-nice restaurant, depending on how you like your vegan fast food.
  • We've finally been graced with the presence of a long-desired Japanese restaurant, with Ginza.
  • The gods of gastronomy have even granted us a once-unthinkable Vietnamese eatery, in the body of one DragonEats.
  • Ritual Coffee is slated to diversify the Haight's artisan coffee game.
  • The Haight has even, by some measures, improved on what people called for most frequently last year when we took a roll call: less drug dealing, less garbage on the street, more people off the street. It's up to you exactly how successful you think these efforts have been.
  • Second Act has given us some more bakery options, with the newly opened Bulka Bakery, and with events like Experimental Music Night have even increased the odds for local live music.
  • Oh yes, People's Cafe is back in business.

The nays?

  • The longstanding wish to close McDonald's doesn't appear to be any nearer the realm of possibility.
  • Sorry folks, still no inkling of a Chinese restaurant on the street.
  • Nightlife in the Haight still begins and ends at the bars, and it's not looking like there'll be a likely successor to the I-Beam any time soon.
  • A half-finished street infrastructure improvement project that has been beset by problems

There are still plenty of vacancies (think the spaces formerly occupied by City Optix and Tatyana and the Homeless Youth Alliance, and the soon-to-close Kids Only and Fresh) percolating for enterprising entrepreneurs.

[Update: City Optix is now Loved To Death.]

So here's a chance to voice your wishes. What does the Haight need now? What kinds of service in the neighborhood aren't being provided?

Go ahead, dream big.
