Larger-Than-Life Glowing Rabbits Coming To Civic Center Plaza This AprilPhoto: Amanda Parer

The San Francisco Arts Commission and Mayor Ed Lee announced today that a public art installation—in the former of massive glow-in-the-dark bunnies—will soon take over Civic Center Plaza.

The piece, titled Intrude, was created by Australian artist Amanda Parer. It features five nylon rabbits inflated up to 23 feet high, and lit internally with stark white light. The glowing rabbits will be on display 24 hours a day from April 4th-25th.

“We are proud to host Intrude, a remarkable family-friendly installation, and welcome these five rabbits to temporarily inhabit the heart of our city for all our families, residents and visitors to enjoy,” Lee said of the installation.

Despite the warm welcome, Intrude is intended to highlight the fact that Australian rabbits, introduced by early settlers, have become an "an out-of-control pest, leaving a trail of ecological destruction wherever they go and defying attempts at eradication," Parer says on her website.

The larger-than-life creatures are meant to "lure you into the artwork, only to reveal the more serious environmental messages in the work," namely humans' environmental impacts on the earth.

This is the herd's second stop on an extensive North American tour, which started earlier this month in Toronto and will ultimately include New York, Houston, Los Angeles, Denver, and Memphis. Here in SF, it's being sponsored by the Arts Commission, Rec & Parks and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

To welcome Intrude, the city is hosting a dedication ceremony at 9am on Tuesday, April 5th. It'll be held on the Polk Street steps of City Hall, across from Civic Center Plaza.

Hungry rabbit fans should also note that during the entire three-week exhibition, Off the Grid will have food trucks ready for visitors at lunch and dinner.
