North Beach Week: Volunteer Arbor Day, Washington Square Park Clean Up, Science Bites!, MorePhoto: advencap/Flickr

Spring cleaning is no fun, but as your mom always said: if everyone works together the job will get done faster ... and then you can go back to the Xbox.

So why not make Mom proud this weekend by pitching in with some local cleaning efforts? Starting at 9:30am on Saturday, volunteers are needed to help do some basic clean-up around Washington Square Park. You get free lunch out of the deal and a clean conscience next time you camp out there on a sunny afternoon.

Volunteers are also needed at Francisco Middle School (2190 Powell St.) for its Volunteer Arbor Day Event. In exchange for free lunch, they'll need some help with landscaping, gardening and litter clean-up.

Once you've cleaned up from your busy morning, maybe carve out some time to swing by the Aquarium of the Bay (Embarcadero & Beach St.) and learn about Bay Area predators starting with the fearsome, terrifying otter. That's right, these guys. The event runs for the next three weeks and features a different predator each weekend.

Elsewhere around North Beach, the SFMTA is once again taking a look at extending the Central Subway down to the Wharf area.

Chris Kohrs—otherwise known as the Hot Cop of the Castro—is back in the news as a judge looks to see if there's enough evidence to make him stand trial in that alleged felony hit-and-run in North Beach from last November.

Lastly, a local architecture firm has won a design competition for their high-tech "ventilated levee" which could protect the Bay Area from rising ocean levels over the next half-century.
