15th & Mission Homeowners, Merchants Unhappy With TL Soup Kitchen's MovePhoto: Google Maps

It looks like the sisters of Fraternite Notre Dame Mary of Nazareth may not be moving their soup kitchen out of the Tenderloin as quickly as expected.

While the Chron reported last month that multimillionaire self-help guru Tony Robbins purchased a restaurant at 1930 Mission St. for the nuns' soup kitchen—which was threatened by a massive rent hike in the Tenderloin earlier this year—Mission Local now reports that condo owners in the building are preparing to fight to keep the soup kitchen out of their building.

The real estate broker who helped the nuns find the vacant commercial space at the base of the building, already zoned for a restaurant, told Mission Local that homeowners in the building are "vehemently against selling" the space to the nuns. Homeowners' concerns included attracting crime, loitering, vermin and devaluing the property's value, according to the broker and a chain of emails the news site obtained.

Neighboring merchants also raised concerns, noting that with the Navigation Center right next door to the building in question, loitering is already a problem for the block.
