Illustrator Peter Berkowitz, who made headlines last month for living in a plywood "housing pod" for $400/month in the Outer Sunset, has now moved out of the box he constructed with friends, after the city's Department of Building Inspection raised concerns over the pod's legality.

DBI had contacted Hoodline after discovering Berkowitz had approached other residents on Craigslist with an offer to install pods, a business idea he has since abandoned.

"It's not just a matter of high rents and a matter of how people are coping with rents in San Francisco," said DBI's legislative and public affairs manager, William Strawn. "There are fire safety realities."

After he heard that city officials had concerns, Berkowitz decided to move out and stay with family to "[figure] things out."

"I’m 100% concerned with doing this legally,” he told the Guardian. “It is not set up any more.”
