Celebrate Your Neighborhood Independent Bookstore This SaturdayPhoto: Green Apple Books

The forecast is predicting a sunny weekend ahead, and what better way to spend it than with a book? This Saturday, bookstores across the city will be offering free drinks, kids' activities, special deals, book signings and author talks, all in celebration of Independent Bookstore Day—and you're invited.

The concept of a day that celebrates small locally-owned bookstores began in our own backyard, with Pete Mulvihill of Green Apple Books and his wife Samantha Schoech. Inspired by the national Record Store Day, Mulvihill and Schoech first launched "California Book Store Day"—before the event went national last year.

What bookstores choose to do during the day's celebrations is up to them, which is part of the fun. Green Apple Books On The Park is hosting a book swap with McSweeney's. Bookshop West Portal is bringing in Caroline Paul, author of the girl-power book The Gutsy Girl, for a talk and signing. And Booksmith will be hosting letter-writing and printmaking demonstrations from noon-3pm.

There are plenty more events to choose from. Here's what's going on at an indie bookstore near you:
