FiDi & North Beach Crime Roundup: Man Stabbed After Refusing To Loan Phone, Cabbie AttackedPhoto: Geri Koeppel/Hoodline

In this week's SFPD Central Station newsletter, Capt. David Lazar tells us he's added more officers to the Fisherman's Wharf beat, which previously only had one officer. With tourist season approaching, more visitors are expected from May through Fleet Week in October, which means more thefts, auto burglaries and quality-of-life issues.

The Wharf now has four officers on duty from 11am–9pm and another four from 2pm–midnight, Capt. Lazar told us. "This is the first time Fisherman’s Wharf has seen officers on foot later in the evening in over three years."

Capt. Lazar also reminds neighbors of his monthly community meeting from 6–7pm this Thursday, April 21st, at Hotel Rex, 562 Sutter St.

Now, for a few of the crimes reported this week by SFPD.

Man stabbed after refusing to loan cell phone

A man, 49, was stabbed while walking on the 300 block of Grant Avenue in Union Square at 1:10am April 9th, after refusing to loan his cell phone to a man, 30, who asked to use it. The suspect had a knife and lunged at the victim, who then noticed a cut on his wrist and puncture wounds to his bicep and shoulder. He went to a convenience store for help, and was transported to the hospital.

Cabbie assaulted after asking for up-front payment

A male cab driver, 47, was assaulted while picking up a fare at Market and Main streets in the FiDi at 1:30am April 9th. A man, 25, entered the cab and said he wanted to go to the East Bay. The driver told him he'd need to pay up front, and the man became upset and began punching the driver on his face and head. The driver jumped out of his cab, and the suspect chased him and jabbed him multiple times with a stick. The suspect ultimately fled the scene. The cabbie suffered bruising to his face, forehead and the backs of his hands, but refused medical transport.

Group of four mug man for money, tablet

At 3:30am on April 10th, a man, 46, was mugged by a group of four men as he was walking westbound on Francisco Street at Stockton Street in North Beach. One suspect approached him and asked for money, and then three additional suspects approached, tackled the victim and emptied his pockets. They got away with his money and a tablet.

Security monitor puts out two garbage can fires

At 5:39am on April 13th, a man monitoring security cameras for the 500 block of Beach Street in Fisherman's Wharf saw a man of about 55-60 walk away from a garbage can he was briefly standing over. The monitor smelled smoke and noticed the garbage can on fire, so he put out the fire; he then noticed a second garbage can on fire, and extinguished that one as well.
