Nob Hill Rooftop Chase Ends In Gun-Toting Suspect Jumping 3–4 FloorsImage: Google

This morning, a burglary suspect jumped from a roof and fell about three or four stories, while fleeing from police during a rooftop pursuit in Nob Hill.

SFPD officers were on the scene at a burglary on the 1300 block of Pacific Avenue in Nob Hill around 8:42am when they found luggage, which was property from the same burglary, on the roof of the building. "A short time later, a second report came in of a burglary on the 1500 block of Leavenworth," SFPD said in a statment. "In this incident, a man broke in, held the victim at gunpoint for a period of time, and then fled."

SFPD officers responded to the Leavenworth scene and found the suspect, a man in his 30s, in the building. He pointed a handgun at the officers and they ordered him to drop the gun. He didn't drop the gun, and instead fled on foot. No shots were fired.

The officers pursued the suspect onto the street on the 1300 block of Pacific, where he broke into a building; they followed him through the building and onto the roof. The suspect then jumped onto a neighboring roof, and officers chased him from roof to roof towards Pacific and Hyde Street, with the suspect dropping the gun along the way. (It was later recovered as evidence.)

Finally, the suspect jumped from one of the roofs, falling three or four stories through a tree, onto the rear of a parked Audi, and then onto the sidewalk. A Fire Department crew was driving by, and SFPD officers flagged them down to treat the suspect. The suspect was transported to San Francisco General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Posts about the scene are popping up on Twitter:

It is undetermined how long the suspect will be in the hospital, but once he's released, SFPD said his charges could include:

  • Multiple burglaries
  • False imprisonment
  • Assault with a deadly weapon
  • Assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer
  • Resisting/obstructing/delaying arrest
  • Use of a firearm in the commission of a felony

SFPD reports that the suspect's name and exact booking charges likely won't be released until Monday.  A photo will be released after witnesses identify him from a photo lineup.
